A play with music about a marine biologist’s quest to track the movement of whales in the Pacific Ocean. It is about his connection with the lonesome and distinct whale whose song is sang at a uniquely high pitched of 52Hz. He finds a connection with the whale and relates his own isolation in the research centre and the production also incorporates flashbacks to his lecturer days and his failed relationship with a researcher. The side story of the researcher’s establishment of a pirate radio station in a cave feels like a distraction from the main story but it does bring in elements of politics into the show. The four piece band works well and they also double up as characters in the story. They simulate whale song and the occasionally poppy tuneful songs such as Castrato Of The Sea. It is a free form piece of theatre and music by Fine Chisel that has moments of brilliance but lacking a solid backing in continuity and consistency.
